7 best Buffer alternatives in 2026, free and paid

By Alex, Founder, KreatorMesh · Published 6 September 2026 · Updated 3 October 2026

People leave Buffer for three different reasons, and they need three different answers. The first group has outgrown the free plan’s cap of ten queued posts per channel and wants a free tool with more room. The second is paying per channel and has noticed the bill no longer matches how little of Buffer they use. The third posts mostly short-form video and finds that Buffer treats TikTok, Reels and Shorts as an afterthought. Below are seven tools, each placed against one of those reasons, with prices read from the vendors’ own pages in September 2026. One of them is ours, and the entry says so.

TL;DR

  • Free with the most room: Metricool — one brand, 20 posts a month, analytics included, no card.
  • Cheapest paid per account: Publer — $5 per social account per month, $4 billed yearly, and a free tier if you do not need X.
  • Free forever, if you run it yourself: Postiz — open source, self-host for the cost of a small server.
  • Teams that need approvals and a shared inbox: Hootsuite or Sprout Social — from $99 per user per month, and worth it only if several people must sign off.
  • Short-form video first: KreatorMesh — native TikTok, Reels and Shorts publishing plus hook testing, from $12/mo. Not free, and the FAQ explains why.
  • Still on a free plan somewhere: Not Later — it dropped its free tier. Metricool or Publer instead.

The 7 tools, in detail

1. Metricool

metricool.comMetricool homepage
What stands out
The free plan is the most generous on this list: a full analytics dashboard, competitor tracking, a link-in-bio page and scheduling for one brand, with no card. Most tools give you a scheduler and charge for the analytics; Metricool does it the other way round.
Best for
A free plan with real analytics, for one brand
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Free (1 brand, 20 posts/mo); Starter from $20/mo (up to 10 brands); Advanced from $53/mo
Main strength
Reporting. If you leave Buffer because you want to know what worked and not only that it posted, Metricool answers that on the free plan.
Watch out for
Twenty posts a month is roughly five a week across every platform combined, which is tight if you post daily. The planner is a calendar grid rather than a composer, so writing a post takes more clicks than in Buffer.
Verdict
The default free answer. Start here if free is the requirement and one brand is enough.

2. Publer

publer.comPubler homepage
What stands out
Pricing that mirrors Buffer’s per-channel model at the same $5 entry point, but with a longer platform list (Mastodon, Bluesky, Telegram, WordPress) and a free tier that behaves like Buffer’s: three accounts, ten queued posts each. A 7-day trial of the paid features needs no card.
Best for
The lowest paid price per social account
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Free (3 accounts, no X, 10 scheduled posts per account); Professional $5/account/mo ($4 billed yearly); Business $10/account/mo ($8 yearly). Every 10th account free
Main strength
The closest like-for-like replacement for Buffer at the same price, for anyone who wants the same workflow with more platforms.
Watch out for
The free tier cannot connect X at all, and it deletes your published-post history after 24 hours, so there is no free analytics. On Pinterest, free accounts need 100 followers or a claimed website before they can connect.
Verdict
Choose it if you liked Buffer’s model and only wanted more platforms for the same money.

3. Later

later.comLater homepage
What stands out
The visual Instagram grid planner is still the best in the category: you see your feed as it will look before anything publishes. Later also runs a creator marketplace for brand deals, which none of the others do.
Best for
Instagram-first visual planning
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
No free plan. Starter $18.75/mo (1 social set, 8 profiles); Growth $37.50/mo (2 sets); Scale $82.50/mo (6 sets). Prices are billed annually; 14-day trial
Main strength
If Instagram is the main channel and the look of the grid matters, Later shows you that and Buffer does not.
Watch out for
Later no longer has a free plan, which many older comparison articles (including the previous version of this one) still claim. A "social set" is one profile per platform, so two Instagram accounts need two sets. X is not supported at all.
Verdict
A good Buffer alternative for Instagram-led brands with a budget. Not the answer if you came here looking for free.

4. Postiz

postiz.comPostiz homepage
What stands out
Open source, with the widest platform list here because the community adds integrations. You can read the code, host it on a $5 VPS, and never pay a subscription. The hosted plans exist for people who want that codebase without the operations work.
Best for
Free forever, if you run the server yourself
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Self-host free (open source); hosted Standard $29/mo (5 channels); Team $39/mo (10); Pro $49/mo (30); Ultimate $99/mo (100)
Main strength
The only genuinely unlimited free option, for anyone comfortable running Docker and registering their own API apps with each platform.
Watch out for
Registering developer apps with Meta, TikTok and X is the real cost: each has an approval process that takes days to weeks, and Meta’s in particular is unforgiving. If you have never done it, the hosted plan at $29 is the honest comparison, and at that price it competes with the paid tools rather than the free ones.
Verdict
Choose it if you enjoy running your own software. Otherwise treat it as a $29/mo tool and compare accordingly.

5. Hootsuite

www.hootsuite.comHootsuite homepage
What stands out
Unlimited social accounts on every plan, a unified inbox for comments and DMs across platforms, approval workflows, and social listening on the higher tiers. This is the tool for a team of three where nothing publishes without sign-off.
Best for
Teams with approval chains and a shared social inbox
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Standard $99/user/mo; Advanced $199/user/mo; higher tiers from $399/user/mo. Prices are billed annually; unlimited social accounts; 14-day trial
Main strength
Everything a marketing team needs in one place, and a vendor that has been doing this for over fifteen years.
Watch out for
The price. A solo creator paying $99 a month for features they will not use is the most common Hootsuite mistake, and there is no free plan to fall back to. The low headline price is annual billing; month-to-month costs more.
Verdict
Right for teams, wrong for individuals. If you are one person, every other tool on this list is a better fit.

6. Sprout Social

sproutsocial.comSprout Social homepage
What stands out
The reporting is the best in the category, and the inbox treats social as a customer-care channel with case management, tagging and response-time metrics. Sprout also recently added a Solo plan at $79, which is its first nod to individuals.
Best for
Larger teams that want reporting and customer care in the same tool
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Solo $79/seat/mo billed annually ($99 monthly, 5 profiles); Standard $199/seat/mo (5 profiles); Professional $299/seat/mo (unlimited); Advanced $399/seat/mo. 30-day trial
Main strength
Reporting that a manager will accept without reformatting, and support tooling for brands whose customers complain in public.
Watch out for
Seats are priced per person, so a five-person team on Standard is $995 a month before add-ons. The 30-day trial is generous; the invoice after it is not.
Verdict
Choose it if you are a brand with a support team. Nobody leaving Buffer over price should be reading this entry.

7. KreatorMesh— this is ours; read the verdict with that in mind

kreatormesh.comKreatorMesh homepage
What stands out
Video is the primary post type rather than an attachment: one composer publishes natively to TikTok, Reels and Shorts, with captions written per platform instead of one text copied everywhere. Hook testing runs small experiments on your own audience and turns the results into rules that check every later draft. An MCP server lets Claude or ChatGPT do all of this from a chat.
Best for
Creators who post short-form video and want to know what works, not only that it posted
Pricing (checked 19 September 2026)
Starter $12/mo (3 accounts); Creator $29/mo (15 accounts, API and MCP); Pro $49/mo (unlimited). No free tier; 5-day trial needs a card
Main strength
Measuring which hooks work on your specific audience and applying that to the next post. Every other tool on this list schedules; this one also tells you whether the draft is likely to land.
Watch out for
There is no free tier, and the trial needs a card ($1 verification, refunded immediately). Hook tests take weeks to conclude by design, so the ruleset is empty at first. The product is months old, not years.
Verdict
Ours, so weigh this accordingly. Choose it if video and hook testing are the point. If free is the requirement, Metricool or Publer above are the honest answer.

How this list was put together

  • Every price was read from the vendor’s own pricing page on 19 September 2026. Where a vendor shows the annual-billing price most prominently (Later, Hootsuite, Sprout), the entry says so instead of quoting it as a monthly rate.
  • Each tool is described on the same six points — what stands out, best for, pricing, main strength, watch-out, verdict — so the entries can be compared, not only read.
  • The list is organised around why people leave Buffer: free-plan limits, per-channel cost, or weak video. A tool that does not answer one of those reasons better than Buffer is not here.
  • KreatorMesh is included and marked as ours. Its entry states its weaknesses — no free tier, a card-gated trial, a young product — in the same terms as the others, and the free recommendations elsewhere on this page are made in good faith.
  • Earlier versions of this article said Later had a free plan. It no longer does, and that correction is the reason this page carries a verification date on every price.

How to choose

You hit Buffer’s free cap of 10 queued posts per channel
Metricool if one brand and 20 posts a month is enough. Publer if you need more accounts and can pay $5 per account. Neither needs a card to start.
You want a free tool and you need X
Metricool. Publer’s free tier excludes X, and Later does not support X at all.
Buffer’s per-channel bill has crept up
Publer is the same model at $5 with a yearly discount to $4. KreatorMesh Starter is $12 flat for three accounts, which is cheaper than Buffer Essentials once you pass two channels.
You mostly post TikTok, Reels and Shorts
KreatorMesh. Later is the runner-up for Instagram-led brands. The team tools handle video but were not built around it.
Several people must approve a post before it publishes
Hootsuite from $99 per user, or Sprout Social if reporting and customer care matter as much as publishing.
You never want to pay a subscription and you can run a server
Postiz, self-hosted. Budget a weekend for the platform developer-app approvals.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Buffer alternative?

Yes. Metricool offers a free plan with one brand and 20 posts a month, including analytics. Publer’s free plan gives three social accounts with ten scheduled posts each, but excludes X. Postiz is open source and free to self-host. Buffer itself also has a free plan: three channels, ten queued posts per channel.

Does Later still have a free plan?

No. As of September 2026 Later’s cheapest plan is Starter at $18.75 a month billed annually, with a 14-day trial. Many comparison articles, including an earlier version of this one, still list Later as free; that is out of date.

Is KreatorMesh free?

No. Plans start at $12 a month, and the 5-day trial needs a card ($1 verification, refunded immediately). There is no free tier. Publishing to most platforms costs us nothing, but AI generation and X’s paid API do, and a free tier funded by paying customers tends to make the paid product worse. If that rules us out, Metricool and Publer are listed above in good faith.

What does $12 a month get that a free plan does not?

Native short-form video publishing to TikTok, Reels and Shorts from one composer, captions written per platform rather than one text copied everywhere, unlimited posts across three accounts, AI credits for drafting, and hook testing that measures what works on your own audience. Free plans generally cap you at around ten to twenty posts and treat video as a secondary post type.

Which Buffer alternative is cheapest for many accounts?

It depends on the count. Publer charges per account ($5, or $4 yearly) with every tenth account free, so twenty accounts cost $72 a month yearly. KreatorMesh Pro is $49 flat for unlimited accounts. Hootsuite is unlimited accounts but $99 per user. Below about ten accounts, Publer is cheapest; above it, a flat-rate plan wins.

Why do people leave Buffer?

Usually one of three reasons: the free plan’s ten-posts-per-channel cap, a per-channel bill that no longer matches how much of the tool they use, or short-form video that feels bolted on rather than native. Which reason is yours decides which alternative fits, which is how this list is organised.

Can I move from Buffer without losing anything?

There is nothing to import. Connect your social accounts to whichever tool you pick, a couple of clicks each, and your posting workflow moves immediately. Anything already scheduled in Buffer still publishes from Buffer, so you can overlap for a week and switch when you are ready.

Do any of these tools have an MCP server or an API?

Buffer, Metricool, Postiz and KreatorMesh all have MCP servers, which let an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT publish through them. Publer, Later, Hootsuite and Sprout have APIs; I could not find a published MCP server for any of them when this was checked. There is a separate comparison of social media MCP servers on this site.

Which alternative supports the most platforms?

Postiz, because the open-source community adds integrations, including Reddit, Discord and Slack. Publer is next with thirteen, including Mastodon, Telegram and WordPress. The rest cover the mainstream nine to eleven. Note that Later does not support X at all.

Are the prices on this page current?

Every price was read from the vendor’s pricing page on 19 September 2026 and the date is shown on each entry. Vendors change plans without notice; if a number looks different on their site today, their site is right and this page needs a refresh.
